Former middleweight No.1 contender Vitor Belfort is the latest fighter to throw his hat into the ring as a potential next opponent for Michael Bisping.
After watching bisping defeat Jorge Rivera at the weekend, Belfort quickly took to Twitter and after retweeting several fans requests that he be the one to fight the Brit next, ‘The Phenom’ confirmed that he wants to step into the Octagon with him.
“On my way to the airport going back to vegas I am looking forward to fight bisping on may card I need to fight soon I want to get busy,” Belfort wrote.
Despite the definitive nature of that statement it’s unlikely that anything has been agreed yet, but it’s clear that Bisping is now at the top of his wishlist.
If this were to take place I’d imagine it’s more likely to happen in June than May though, as it’s rumored that could be when the next big event in the UK takes place. Assuming that is the case then this would certainly fit the bill as the main event.
It may be a fight ‘The Count’ would rather avoid though as stylistically Belfort is a bad match-up for him. While he’s been able to get some good wins under his belt lately against heavy-hitters thanks to his superior striking technique, that won’t be the case against the Brazilian who has the power, speed and movement to cause him some serious problems.
A win over Belfort would arguably be the biggest of Bisping’s career however, and could be the big-name scalp he needs in order to qualify for a title shot.
