In a new interview with Karyn Bryant for MMAHeat Vladimir Matyushenko says that he’s not dismissing the hype surrounding the 23 year-old light-heavyweight prodigy Jon ‘Bones’ Jones who he faces in the headline bout at this weekend’s UFC On Versus 2 card.
“I think he’s good and dangerous, yeah, and If I’m going to fight somebody like that I’d better not underestimate him,” he says.
One of ‘Bones’ Jones most impressive abilities is his ability to work a multitude of spectacular wrestling throws at a moment’s notice. Matyushenko is also well known for his wrestling, but when asked whether that would help him to nullify his opponents threat his answer suggested he was either being modest or perhaps isn’t entirely sure if that’s the case or not.
“Yeah I suppose so,” he says without much enthusiasm. “Like I said it’s my first [chance] to fight him and we will see what’s happening.”
In fairness It’s perhaps wise for Matyushenko to proceed with caution in that regard given how Jones manhandled another recognized wrestler in Matt Hamill just two fights ago.
Later in the interview Matyushenko is asked who else he has his eye on fighting in the future if things go his way at the weekend.
“Lil Nog will be a good fight for me…Tito [Ortiz], Brandon [Vera],” he states, before adding, “there’s plenty of other guys out there so hopefully I’m not going to be out of a job anytime soon.”
