Rumors emerging from Japan today suggest that Wanderlei Silva will face off against Yoshihiro Akiyama early next year.  Sherdog reporter Tony Loiseleur first broke the news via twitter, stating that the fight would be at 185lbs and likely to feature at either UFC 110 or UFC 111.

Silva is currently taking time off to recover from facial surgery he has undertaken to deal with a large amount of scar tissue he has developed around his eyes and nose during his fighting career.   His last outing in the octagon was at UFC 99 where he lost as split-decision to Rich Franklin.  Akiyama meanwhile made a winning start to his career in the promotion at UFC 100 in a back and forth stand-up battle with Alan Belcher.

The match-up  would be Silva’s first in the middleweight division and, having defeated a string of Japanese fighters during his time in Pride, he will see this as a perfect opportunity to get back to winning ways in the octagon.   Akiyama will have other ideas however, and with only one loss on his 16 fight career he will prove a stern test for the Brazilian.
