Despite recently stating that he didn’t want to fight Brian Stann, it turns out that is indeed who Wanderlei Silva will face next.
The fight between the two hard-hitting middleweights is now set for UFC 130 on May 28th, on a card headlined by the lightweight title rematch between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.
Following his January 1st TKO win over Chris Leben, former war hero Stann had made it clear that a fight with ‘The Axe Murderer’ was very much on his mind.
“I think I’d like to fight Wanderlei next,” Stann stated at the UFC 125 post-fight press conference. “He’s been a guy who I’ve watched for years before I ever put a glove on. He’s amazing, he’s as tough as they come, he’s as good as they come, he’s a multiple weight champion, I think I’d like to fight him next. I’m in this to fight the best.
More recently UFC president Dana White admitted that Silva, who’s spent much of the last year out due to a knee injury, was less keen on locking horns with a fighter he liked and respected.
“We were actually trying to hook [Silva] up with Brian Stann. He doesn’t want to fight Brian Stann. He’s like, ‘F*ck that. Everybody is going to hate me if I fight Brian Stann. Everybody loves Brian Stann.’ But that’s the fight we’re trying to make right now,” White stated.
It seems that in the end White eventually has persuaded the Brazilian to the match-up, which has all the makings of a barn-burner.
