This past weekend was fairly quiet on the MMA front as far as the major promotions go with the Zuffa related promotions taking a brief break, leaving XFC 16’s main event between former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner and former UFC veteran Drew Fickett as one of the most notable scraps.
Fought at a catchweight of 160lbs, it was Varner who came out on top, catching Fickett with a two-piece combination on the feet in the opening minutes of the fight and then finishing the job via ground and pound which produced the tap-out.
It wasn’t so long ago that Varner was on the verge of retirement after a run of poor results which lead to him being overlooked by the UFC when the WEC’s roster was merged into the promotion at the start of 2011. Back-to-back wins for XFC are likely to give him a much needed confidence boost however.
As for Fickett, the often troubled fighter’s one-night Shine Fights grand-prix victory back in September of 2010 which seemed to herald a potential return to form seems a long time ago now with the 32 year-old having lost his last four fights, all coming by strikes in the first round.
