This weekend was fairly quiet on the MMA front, but one fight in regional Canadian promotion ‘Ax Combat’ still managed to grab some headlines due to an unusual submission combined with incompetent refereeing.
The fight in question featured Randy Couture’s former wife Kim Couture taking on BJJ specialist Sheila Bird.
Early in the fight Couture was taken down and then before long found herself in a rare scissor-choke. Trapped between Bird’s legs Couture was unable to escape and visibly goes limp as she passes out.
Unfortunately the referee is slow to react and as a result Couture endures another 5-10 seconds of the choke while out cold before the fight is finally stopped. Couture lay motionless on the floor for a lengthy spell afterwards and is seen convulsing at one point, though thankfully she eventually regains consciousness and is seen congratulating Bird on her victory.
So, all ina all a rough night for Couture who now drops to 3-5 in her MMA career, while Bird moves to 2-0. Clearly the biggest loser here was the referee though.
