Given the bad blood between the two the rematch between Jamie Varner and Donald Cerrone fireworks were almost guaranteed and thankfully neither fighter disappointed.
Cerrone got the edge in their last encounter, but from early in the first it was Cerrone who was getting the better of the action.
‘The Cowboy’ was clearly fired up from the opening bell and before long had landed a knee to the face of Varner that clearly hurt him.
Cerrone also clipped Varner with a left hook later in the first to ensure the round was his, though Varner did land some heavy leather of his own at times.
A big surprise in the fight was Cerrone’s willingness to go for takedowns which he did successfully throughout the fight, while Varner was unable to get his own wrestling game going.
Cerrone was also finding success with punch combination’s finished off with leg kicks which he landed repeatedly, and by the later rounds this was clearly taking a toll with Varner bloodied and looking both tired and dispirited.
At the final bell it looked like the two might finally shake hands and lay their rivalry to rest, but Cerrone shrugged off the handshake, causing Varner to shove him before being broken up by officials.
After Cerrone picked up a well earned 30-27 win on the judges scorecards to the appreciation of the Colorado crowd he took to the mike and offered his rival a rubber match in Varner’s home state of Arizona which he accepted.
