WEC founder and current general manager Reed Harris has had as good a vantage point as any in the past 12 months to view his promotions fights. That doesn’t however make it any easier for him to pick just five fights of the year though, considering that WEC’s fighters have a knack of producing exciting MMA bouts at every event.
Nonetheless, Harris has put on his thinking cap and revealed his picks for 2009 at WEC.TV. Here’s some highlights:
JAMIE VARNER VS. DONALD CERRONE – Jan. 25, 2009
“It sounds cliché’, but it was one of those fights that had me on the edge of my seat. I would love to see the rematch.”
MIGUEL ANGEL TORRES VS. TAKEYA MIZUGAKI – April 5, 2009
“This is one of my favorite fights of all-time. It was literally a test of wills once these two were locked in the cage.”
SCOTT JORGENSEN VS. ANTONIO BANUELOS – June 7, 2009
“This is my darkhorse for fight of the year. If you don’t believe me, watch it again. This fight, in its purest form, is what WEC is all about.”
MIKE BROWN VS. URIJAH FABER II – June 7, 2009
“At the end of that fight, I was honored to be standing in the cage with two of the best 145-pounders this sport has ever seen.”
DONALD CERRONE VS. BEN HENDERSON – Oct. 10, 2009
“This fight is fresh in my mind and its right up there with some of the best fights I’ve ever seen.
