UFC president Dana White opened up today’s UFC 117 pre-fight press conference by stating that the winner of Jon Fitch Vs Thiago Alves will fight for the welterweight title against the winner of Georges St.Pierre Vs Josh Koscheck which will take place later this year.

That comes as something of a surprise with even Jon Fitch stating yesterday that he believed the winner may be expected to face the winner of Jake Shields Vs Martin Kampmann before earning a title shot.

Though Fitch has more than earned another shot at the title having now won 12 of his last 13 fights, this could pose a problem if his friend and team-mate Josh Koscheck emerges victorious against GSP.  The two fighters have previously stated they will not fight each other.

Dana insisted today that they will, but Fitch remained diplomatic, saying that he was only focused on his fight with Alves for now.

From Alves perspective the news that he too could have a potential title shot if he emerges victorious may also be a surprise given that the fight on Saturday night will be his first since losing to current champion St.Pierre in the summer of last year.
