There’s some huge bouts on the horizon, but Dana White has predicted that one in particular, a middleweight title fight between Israel Adesanya and Paulo Costa that’s set to headline UFC 253 on September 26th, will prove to be the best of the bunch.
“I don’t know what you guys think, but I predict that’s ‘Fight of the Year,’” White said at the UFC 252 post-fight press conference. “I think stylistically, it’s the perfect fight. If you look at the way Costa fights, he puts pressure on you, he stays in your face the whole time. Adesanya likes to stay on the outside and pick you apart.
“I think that fight is going to be an absolute war. Just stylistically, it matches up really, really well, and both guys are animals. Both guys want this fight really bad, and I think it’s going to be ‘Fight of the Year.’”
That’s a big statement from the UFC President given that the year to date has already seen some incredible fights, perhaps most notably including Weili Zhang’s five round war with Joanna Jedrzejczyk back in March and another 25-minute thriller between Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker in June.
Adesanya vs. Costa is certainly a mouth-watering prospect though, with both men yet to have suffered the bitter taste of defeat in their respective 19-0 and 13-0 career’s to date, including a combined finishing rate of 26 stoppages from 32 fights.
