Kevin Holland is known for his motor-mouthed antics inside the Octagon and last night was no exception in his main event fight with Derek Brunson at UFC On ESPN 21.
The only difference was this time he was losing handily as Brunson dominated him on the mat.
Despite that, it often seemed as if Holland was still more eager to come up with amusing quips and engage in some banter with Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was watching from cage-side, than showing a sense of urgency to find a way to turn the fight around and extend his five-fight winning streak.
Dana White has been one of Holland’s biggest supporters in recent times, but post-fight the UFC president was left bemused by what he’d just watched and went as far as to question whether the fighter had mentally broke during the fight.
“I think that was a mental breakdown,” UFC president Dana White told Yahoo! Sports.
“The only other thing I saw like it was [in boxing] when Lennox Lewis fought that guy [Oliver McCall] who kept his hands at his side and was crying.
“I don’t know what he was doing. I think he might not have been able to handle the pressure and just broke mentally. I haven’t seen anything like that.”
Meanwhile, back in the studio, Rashad Evans wasn’t going quite that far in his assessment of Holland’s mental state, but he was nonetheless left ‘frustrated’ by his performance.
“I felt like he was just doing a little too much… You can’t forget what we’re out here to do. He’s out here to fight, and at some point, you have to hit that switch,” Evans said.
For his part, Holland revealed post-fight that he’s considering dropping down to welterweight for his next fight.
