Demian Maia’s next opponent will be Gilbert Burns in a bout scheduled for UFC Fight Night 170 in Brasilia, Brazil on March 14th.
The 42-year-old Maia enjoyed a strong 2019 campaign, racking up three wins in that 12 month period.
Maia’s run began with a rear-naked choke submission win over Lyman Good, followed by a majority decision victory against Anthony Rocco Martin and most recently sending Ben Askren into retirement with another rear-naked choke finish.
That leaves Maia ranked No.6 in the division heading into this fight, while his opponent Burns is currently placed at No.13 in the standings.
Like Maia, the 33-year-old Burns is a highly decorated BJJ player, which adds extra intrigue to this particular match-up and he’s also in a good run of form in the UFC, having compiled four wins in a row.
That run began with a decision victory against Olivier Aubin-Mercier, then a submission victory against Mike Davis and two more wins on the scorecards against Alexey Kunchenko and Gunnar Nelson.
Maia vs. Burns is one of the biggest fights so far attached to the UFC Fight Night 170 card, which will also feature Johnny Walker vs. Nikita Krylov, Paige VanZant vs. Amanda Ribas and Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos vs. Alexey Kunchenko.
