A heavyweight title fight between current champion Francis Ngannou and interim titleholder Ciryl Gane has been targeted to headline UFC 270, the promotion’s first pay-per-view event of 2022 on January 22nd.
Adding extra spice to the occasion is the fact that the two are former training partners who have both gone on to great things in recent years in the UFC’s heavyweight division.
Ngannou has become renowned as arguably the most feared one-punch KO artist in the UFC, with his last five opponents having all crumbled as a result of his heavy hands, including four first-round stoppages and three of those actually occurring within the first minute.
What’s even more impressive is the calibre of opposition he was going up against, including former champions like Stipe Miocic, Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos, along with other leading contenders like Curtis Blaydes and Jairzinho Rozenstruik.
However, in Gane he faces an equally formidable opponent as though he may not wield the same stopping power, ‘Bon Gamin’ makes up for it with his technical striking, strong wrestling and high fight IQ.
It’s been a winning formula for him so far as he’s currently a perfect 10-0 in his MMA career to date, including seven wins in the UFC over the likes of Junior dos Santos, Jairzinho Rozenstruik, Alexander Volkov and most recently a third round TKO stoppage of Derrick Lewis.
Ngannou vs. Gane will front a UFC 270 card that also has the likes of Derrick Brunson vs. Jared Cannonier and Greg Hardy vs. Alexey Oleynik on-board so far.
