A fight between Islam Makhachev and Thiago Moises will now headline UFC On ESPN 26 on July 17th after the originally planned main event between Max Holloway and Yair Rodriguez fell through due to an injury.
Makhachev is currently on a seven-fight winning streak in the UFC that spans almost five years, during which time he’s defeated the likes of Nik Lentz, Gleison Tibau, Davi Ramos and most recently Drew Dober, who he finished by submission.
As such, Makhachev has been touted as a future champion by none other than Khabib Nurmagomedov, but he’s still only ranked No.9 in the lightweight division for now, and despite calling for a big-name opponent for his next fight, he’s instead been given Moises, who is ranked No.14.
Moises is riding a three-fight unbeaten stretch that’s seen him defeat notable opponents like Michael Johnson, Bobby Green and Anthony Hernandez, with his overall UFC record to date standing at 4-2.
Makhachev vs. Moises fronts a UFC On ESPN 26 event that will also feature the return from retirement of former women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate, who takes the co-main event spot in a fight with Marion Reneau, while Jeremy Stephens also goes up against Mateusz Gamrot on the main card.
