Michelle Waterson will take on former strawweight titleholder Carla Esparza at UFC Fight Night 172 in Portland, Oregon on April 11th.
Waterson’s last fight was against annother former divisional champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk, which ended in a unanimous decision loss back in October of last year.
Before that Waterson had racked up three wins in a row over Cortney Casey, Felice Herrig and Karolina Kowalkiewicz and had been hoping to press into the title reckoning at 115lbs, but now she’s ranked No.8 in the division heading into this latest fight.
On the other hand, Esparza is starting to rise back up the pecking order after registering back-to-back wins in her 2019 campaign.
That began with a unanimous decision win over Vima Jandiroba and was followed up by a majority decision victory against Alexa Grasso, leaving her one place above Waterson at No.7 on the strawweight rankings.
Waterson vs. Esparza joins a UFC Fight Night 167 card that will also feature Alistair Overeem vs. Walt Harris.
