A trilogy fight between veteran Brazilian stars Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira has been targeted as the co-main event for UFC On ESPN 10 on July 25th, which is expected to take place on the UFC’s ‘Fight Island’.
That’s the word from Dana White, who said on Steve-O’s podcast that it’s currently in the works, but hasn’t yet been finalized.
The first encounter between the pair took place all the way back at PRIDE Critical Countdown in 2005 and turned out to be an instant classic, which Shogun won by unanimous decision.
They then fought again at UFC 198 in 2016 and again it was Shogun who got the nod on the scorecards, while the bout also achieved ‘Fight Of The Night’ status,
Fast forward to more recent times and Shogun’s last Octagon outing came against Paul Craig in November of last year and resulted in a split draw verdict.
Prior to that the 38-year-old had earned a TKO victory over Tyson Pedro to get back to winning ways after having suffered a KO defeat against Anthony Smith.
As for Nogueira, this will be only his 3rd fight in the last three-and-a-half years, and he is coming off a KO loss to Ryan Spann back in May of last year, with his other bout during that period being a TKO finish of Sam Alvey in 2018.
Shogun vs. Lil Nog would join a UFC On ESPN 10 card that currently features the likes of Aspen Ladd vs. Sara McMann and Gian Villante vs. Maurice Green.
