UFC Fight Night 233 on December 9th won’t be taking place in Shanghai, China as originally intended, with it now emerging that the show is now going to happen back home in Las Vegas instead.
The event, headlined by Song Yadong vs. Chris Gutierrez, had been set to be the UFC’s first trip back to Shanghai since November of 2017. It’s a destination that is important to the promotion as they opened a UFC Institute there in 2019, but for reasons that haven’t been disclosed at this time they have decided to pull the plug on the event being held in the city less than a month before it was due to take place.
One immediate casualty of the show is the four ‘Road To UFC Season 2’ finals that were due to take place on the card, and at this stage there’s no indication of when they will now take place.
On top of that, with numerous fighters on the line-up being from Asian countries it’s possible that the short-notice change-up may lead to travel Visa issues that could result in more fighters being pulled from the card in the coming weeks.
