Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt has revealed that he was suffering from vertigo during his submission loss to Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC 300 last weekend.

“I felt great in my fight until I started to experience vertigo,” Garbrandt wrote on X. “I couldn’t control the spinning once it was to the ground. Hats off to Deiveson and his camp! I ended up going to the hospital where I was still experiencing the vertigo, throwing up until 4 a.m. ,,, I’ll get this corrected. I’ve dealt with vertigo since 2012. Thank you to the fans that came out to support. It wasn’t my night, but I love doing what I do. I’ll be back in there before the year is up.”

The 32-year-old Garbrandt has been one of the most injury-jinxed fighters on the roster during his UFC run, with everything from back, neck, hand and bicep injuries, together with struggles with Covid, blood clots and pneumonia all having kept him out of action for lengthy spells over the years.

On top of that, during a dismal four-year period starting in late 2017, Garbrandt lost five out of his six fights in the Octagon, with four of those defeats coming by either KO or TKO.

However, last year there was signs Garbrandt might finally be turning a corner after picking up back-to-back wins over Trevin Jones and Brian Kelleher, but his loss on Saturday night and vertigo issues have again led to concerns for his health and question-marks regarding his long-term future in the sport.
