Bo Nickal has revealed the reason that his fight with Joe Pyfer was postponed from UFC 335 in December to headlining a yet-to-be-announced Fight Night event in February of next year.
Pyfer had actually been the first to indicate that his opponent being injured was the reason for the delay, and Nickal has now confirmed that is the case.
“Yeah, pretty much,” Nickal said on The Ariel Helwani Show. “Bumps and bruises are a part of our job so that was something that I’ve been dealing with for a long time.
“We all have injuries, every fighter has injuries. This is something I’ve been dealing with since January, February and now I feel like I’m at a point where I needed to just take some time to stop something from getting even worse than what it already is.”
Meanwhile, Pyfer has added more insight into the situation, revealing that he actually turned down an alternative fight with Anthony Hernandez to stay locked into fighting Nickal at a later date instead.
And in an interesting twist, Pyfer revealed that his own injury woes are the reason he’s decided to fight Nickal instead of Hernandez, believing that a win against him is his best path to getting into title contention.
“I probably got one real run at the title with the way my injuries are,” Pyfer said.
Truth be told the logic there is questionable given that while Hernandez has now lost back-to-back fights, he’s still ranked No.8 in the division, while Nickal’s two wins in the past 12 months have taken him to the No.11 spot.
Perhaps closer to the real reason is that Pyfer just believes that Nickal is a good stylistic match-up for him.
“I think it’s a great fight for me. It’s a bad, bad fight for him,” Pyfer said.
““If he doesn’t take me down and finish me right away, he’s going to struggle. He’s going to drown out there because he doesn’t have the MMA experience that I have.”
