UFC 333 Bonus Awards

UFC 333 Bonus Awards

Following last night’s UFC 333 event the evening’s $100,000 bonus awards were announced.

Earning ‘Fight Of The Night’ honors was the co-main event bantamweight title re-run between Petr Yan and Merab Dvalishvili, which was again fought at a furious pace from start to finish.

Merab started fast as expected and did a good job of swarming Yan with relentless takedown attempts and active striking in the first couple of rounds. Yan was managing to fend off a lot of those attempts, but was spending so much time defending that he rarely had an opportunity to get his own offense going. However, by the third round Yan had his takedown defense completely dialed-in and started to make his mark on the feet, most notably landing a clean uppercut that put Merab back on his heels, and then not long after landing a big body kick that had the ex-champ grimacing in pain. That gave him a platform to build from, and he was able to maintain that momentum in the rounds that followed as Merab continued to push the pace, but couldn’t find a way to regain control of the action. As such it’s Yan who emerges with a unanimous decision victory and retains the 135lb title.

Meanwhile, main event winner Alexander Volkanovski earned one of two ‘Performance Of The Night’ awards after he handed the previously 20-0 unbeaten Movsar Evloev by TKO. Volkanovski soon established himself as the better striking technician in this featherweight title clash, while also doing a good job of getting quickly back to his feet when taken down. Volkanovski gained even more control over the fight in the second round and would go on to hurt Evloev with a flush left hook and hard right hand behind it that led to him being bundled onto the mat, where he was left covering up as Volkanovski blasted him with ground-and-pound to seal the TKO finish.

Also earning a performance bonus was Lone’er Kavanagh, who adopted a cautious approach against the aggressive Ramazan Temirov for much of the first round. However, when Kavanagh saw an opportunity he seized on it, skilfully blocking a power punch on his right side, then immediately delivering a powerful uppercut with his left hand to rock his opponent, then unleashed a lightning quick flurry of accurate punches to send him to the canvas. Temirov attempted to scramble back to his feet, but was caught by two big left hands to keep him down and secure a TKO victory.
