Following last night’s UFC Fight Night 289 event the recipients of the evening’s $100,000 bonus awards were announced.

‘Fight of The Night’ honors went to an incredible main event bantamweight war between Raul Rosas Jr and Raoni Barcelos that unfortunately had an alarming ending late in the 5th and final round.

The fight was fought at a ferocious pace from start to finish, including countless back-and-forth striking exchanges that left both men bloodied. Barcelos was also finding success with crafty takedowns, but Rosas Jr was composed on the mat and always found a way back to his feet.

As the rounds wore on it became clear this was a ‘Fight of The Year’ contender and the 39-year-old veteran Barcelos appeared to have edged ahead of his 21-year-old counterpart on the scorecards, but Rosas Jr looked energetic in the final five minutes to set up a thrilling finale. Then out of the blue in the dying stages of the round Rosas Jr went for a trip takedown, and suddenly Barcelos was unconscious on the canvas with no obvious explanation as to how it had happened. Perhaps it was the way his head fell slightly awkwardly into the cage on the way down, but whatever the reason there was then serious concern for his well-being as he continued to remain out cold for a long time and was eventually stretchered out and rushed to hospital. Raul Rosas Jr was declared the winner by KO and thankfully there’s been a positive update on Barcelos since, with the fighter being conscious and able to move all his limbs.

Meanwhile, recent Contender Series recruit Luis Hernandez earned one of two ‘Performance Of The Night’ honors after he stepped in on just two days notice to make his UFC debut against Sedriques Dumas on the main card, and quickly seized upon a guillotine choke to force a tap-out after just 57 seconds.

Also taking home a performance bonus was Yazmin Jauregui, who opened the show in style with a 62 second KO finish against Vanessa Demopoulos after unleashing a relentless combination of left and right hands on the feet.
