During a recent Q&A with BT Sport, Dana White was asked what the two big fights he wants to make most this year are.
“Let’s get Leon (Edwards) his (welterweight title) fight, that’d be great to get that done,” White told BT Sport. “He absolutely deserves the next title shot and yes, I’m wishing for nothing but good luck for Edwards this year. He’s had a rough run. Usman, we’re waiting for his hand to get cleared and he’s got the fight.”
Edwards is currently on a 10-fight unbeaten stretch in the UFC, defeating the likes of Nate Diaz, Rafael dos Anjos, Donald Cerrone and Vicente Luque along the way, but despite repeatedly calling for a title shot he’s been repeatedly overlooked for one until now.
Meanwhile, despite the many headaches Jon Jones has given him over the year with his out-of-the-Octagon antics, White is eager to finally see him get his first fight at heavyweight.
“But the other one is, it’d be good to see Jon Jones back this year. He says he wants to fight heavyweight. I’d like to get a Jon Jones fight at heavyweight this year if possible.”
White also said in a separate interview with ESPN that it’s possible Jones could fight for the interim heavyweight title while current champion Francis Ngannou is out of action due to knee surgery.
“I haven’t thought about it at all, but yeah, it sounds like something we would do,” White confirmed.
“Not until we know what Francis is gonna do or what’s gonna happen, but if that’s the case, if he ends up sitting out for a year, Jon could come right in and fight for a title.”
