Brandon Moreno called out Henry Cejudo last year and with both fighters now coming off a loss ‘Triple C’ is reigniting the idea by suggesting they settle their differences at UFC 306 at the Sphere in Las Vegas on September 14th.
“Henry Cejudo don’t retire yet, please wait for me,” Moreno had initially wrote back in May of last year. “I’m going to win my fight in July and then we can finish business. Main event in Mexico City. I go to 135 lbs, f*ck belts, just you and me in the octagon!!”
However, Moreno then lost his flyweight title to Alexandre Pantoja that July and then picked up another loss on Saturday night when he came out on the wrong-end of a split-decision verdict in a rematch with Brandon Royval.
Cejudo also suffered a loss recently to Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 298 that dashed his title hopes for now, and sees the Moreno fight as the perfect way to rebound from that.
“What fight would be better than ‘Triple C’ vs. Brandon Moreno, the Mexican-American vs. the true Mexican, and they come together, and they do a five-round showdown – at The Sphere, in Las Vegas, for Mexican Independence Day?” Cejudo said on his YouTube channel.
“I like it. I think if there’s any way we should settle it, enough talking, enough cringing, enough antics, and enough all of that. The only way to get it on, Brandon Moreno, is I accept your challenge. Let’s do it: Mexican Independence Day. What you got? You going to sign that contract? Are you a Mexican, or a Mexican’t?”
There is some genuine history between these two as years ago ‘Triple C’ brought in Moreno as a training partner to help him train for a fight againts Demetrious Johnson, providing him with food and accomodation.
Cejudo then campaigned to get Moreno on The Ultimate Fighter Season 24, but due to the way the teams were picked Moreno ended up on Joseph Benavidez’s team instead.
Later on Cejudo revealed that he felt betrayed by the fact the fact that Moreno then went on to help Benavidez train for his eventual fight with Cejudo at the TUF finale.
At this stage no fights have been booked for UFC 306, but the UFC are eager to put on a big card for what will be there first visit to the spectacular Sphere arena to celebrate Mexican Independence Day, so Cejudo vs. Moreno will surely be a tempting option for them to consider.
