Curtis Blaydes will fight UFC interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall in the co-main event of UFC 304 in July and the current kingpin of the division Jon Jones believes Blaydes has a good chance to beating the British star in his own backyard.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if Curtis won, I’ve seen scenarios like this time and time again,” Jones told a fan on X. “Dude prematurely drinking his own Kool-Aid ends up with a huge piece of humble pie. I mean If Sergei can touch Tom that easy, I’m sure Curtis can too. When Curtis decides to go, he’s a lot faster than people realize, and he hits hard. A few well-timed shots and that strong top game, it could be a long night for old Tommy boy. Either way, I’ll be watching, excited to have some additional footage.”
That being said, Jones admits he does tend to have a natural bias towards his own countrymen.
“Sure, if I’m being completely honest, I always root for the Americans.. especially American wrestlers.. at the end of the day no matter who wins, Curtis is no walk in the park either. The only lane I’ve ever known, the fast one. I know no other speed. Can’t remember the last time I wasn’t at the big boy table.”
It’s also likely that Jones is still holding a grudge against Aspinall as he hasn’t taken kindly to the fact the interim champ has repeatedly called for a chance to unify the heavyweight title against him instead of Stipe Miocic next.
Those pleas fell on deaf ears though and so Jones vs. Miocic remains the plan, with ‘Bones’ having all but confirmed this week in a since deleted comment that he’ll be fighting in November.
“November 9th Madison Square Garden here I come baby. #NewStill” Jones wrote earlier in the week before deleting the post.
