The UFC brass clearly weren’t happy with the standard of the fights on last night’s UFC On ESPN 61 event in Las Vegas as they broke with tradition and only awarded three bonus awards instead of the usual four.
The ‘Fight Of The Night’ award was discarded and instead three ‘Performance Of The Night’ bonuses were dished out, with one going to main event winner Sergey Spivak, who swiftly avenged a decision loss to Marcin Tybura a few years ago when he locked in an armbar submission just 1.44mins into the fight.
Toshiomi Kazama’s place in the UFC was surely on the line last night after two 1st round losses in a row, and he managed to survive an aggressive onslaught from Charalampos Grigoriou early in the 2nd round before catching him in a triangle choke submission, forcing a tap-out mid-way through the round.
The final performance bonus of the night went to Youssef Zalal, who notched up his 2nd rear-naked choke submission win in a row since re-joining the UFC, with Jarno Errens being his 1st round victim on this occasion.
