Carlos Ulberg was able to outstrike Volkan Oezdemir in a competitive fight at UFC Fight Night 248 to win by unanimous decision.
Round One:
Oezdemir takes the center of the Octagon and then lands a calf kick. Kick from Ulberg strays to the groin, but there’s only the briefest of timeouts before they get back to it.
Oezdemir targets the body and then lands a couple of calf kicks. Good left followed by a right from Ulberg. He looks for a high kick and a chopping Oezdemir low-kick trips him to the mat for a moment.
Back on the feet. Ulberg with short power punches inside. Oezdemir stalking as Ulberg circles on the outside. Short flurry of punches from Oezdemir.
Clinch up for a moment and Oezdemir lands a knee to the body. A short burst of punches from Oezdemir as he presses forward. LOts of pressure from him.
Hard left hook lands for Oezdemir. Now a low kick. Two hard left hands connect for Ulberg.
Both men land hard left hooks. Stiff jab from Ulberg. Now a couple of harder punches that forces Oezdemir to stay behind a high guard for a moment.
Oezdemir lands to the body. Ulberg with an aggressive combo now, landing hard to the body and then upstairs.
Big hook from Oezdemir now and a head kick just grazes the target. He’s trying to capitalize on that, but Ulberg steers just out of danger as the round ends.
Round Two:
Thigh kick from Oezdemir. Now a low kick. He lands to the calf again, but then Ulberg responds with a heavy one of his own.
Very competitive back-and-forth action so far from these two. Ulberg with a check left hook. Oezdemir looking for an uppercut but not quite finding it.
A straight followed by a rip to the body from Ulberg. Spinning backfist attempt from Oezdemir just misses as he darted forward.
Sticking jab for Ulberg. He lands a heavy one-two. Ulberg circling now as Oezdemir tries to pressure.
A couple of jabs from Ulberg and Oezdemir swipes out with hooks. Nice counter-punch from Ulberg.
Solid right from Ulberg. He lands a jab as Oezdemir is coming forward. Oezdemir misses with a spinning backfist.
Oblique kick for Ulberg. Now one from Oezdemir, and again. Ulberg tries to work the jab, but Oezdemir grazes him with an overhand.
Ulberg with a punch then just gets his head out of danger before Oezdemir could land his counter.
Round Three:
Jab for Ulberg. He lands that nicely again. Now he lands to the body. Oezdemir gets his job working.
Right hook for Oezdemir lands. He lands it again as Ulberg was circling. Ulberg sits down on a couple of punches. Oezdemir drives in for a takedown, but Ulberg stuffs it.
Right hand from Ulberg and Oezdemir’s legs seemed to give way just for a moment, but he recovers almost instantly.
Another punch from Oezdemir. Body punch. Oezdemir ducks under a punch and rips to the body nicely.
Jab for Ulberg. Another clean one lands. Now he unleashes harder punches. Oezdemir with a low kick. Another leg kick for him. Now an inside leg kick and a light punch to the body.
Body kick for Oezdemir. Right hand from Ulberg, whose punches seem to have more sting on them at this stage. Ulberg times a left hand nicely.
Oezdemir in on a takedown attempt, but Ulberg does well to defend against it and keep upright.
Good strike for Ulberg, but Oezdemir catches him on the counter and knocks him off balance for a split-second.
Oezdemir fires off a wheel kick attempt that misses late in the round – we’re headed to the scorecards.
Decision:
A competitive back-and-forth striking battle here then, but despite Oezdemir’s pressure it was Ulberg who consistently seemed to have the edge in the exchanges, landing the more impactful strikes while showing good footwork too. Ulberg wins by unanimous decision (30-27 x2, 29-28).
