UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones today plead guilty to Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) on May 19th in New York which resulted in him crashing his Bentley into a telephone poll.
a DWI differs fromo Driving Under the Influence (DUI) in that it means his case only refers to drink driving and does not imply the possibility of any other drug being involved.
The judge ruled that Jones should have his driver’s license suspended immediately and will also have to attend alcohol abuse classes and have a dependancy evaluation.
That’s not the end of the matter for the 24 year-old however as he now faces a further court date on June 19th in which he could face up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine for his actions.
However, as part of his guilty plea deal it’s believed that Jones will avoid jail time and instead will be given a conditional discharge along with the fine.
At the weekend UFC president Dana White said that he will stand by the fighter who he still believes to be “a good kid”, though he admitted he would need extra guidance to ensure that this was a one time occurance.
White also confirmed that Jones is still slated to defend his title against Dan Henderson in September.
