Thiago Silva Suspended For Six Months After Positive Marijuana Test Following UFC On Fuel TV 6

UFC light-heavyweight star Thiago Silva continues to be his own worst enemy after being slapped with a six month suspension due to testing positive for marijuana metabolites following UFC On Fuel TV 6 in China earlier this month.

In addition to the suspension Silva has also agreed to take part in a drug rehab program and his victory over Stanislav Nedkov has now been declared a no-contest.

I have to say this can’t be seen as anything other than sheer stupidity on Silva’s part given that just two fights ago he had to serve a year’s suspension after taking steroids and then trying to evade being caught by falsifying a post-fight urine sample.  As with this latest transgression, that punishment also included a victory over Brandon Vera being altered to a no-contest.

As a result this talented fighter now holds an abysmal recent record of 0-2-2 and joins the likes of Nick Diaz, Dave Herman and Matt Riddle who have also tested positive for the drug in recent times.

Of course we all know that marijuana isn’t a performance enhancer and that compared to something like steroids it’s really not a big deal – but what matters is that regardless of what you think of it, it is still treated as a banned substance.

Is it really too much to ask for professional athletes to take their job seriously and at the very least lay off on the weed in the build-up to their fights?
