UFC President Dana White appears to have slammed the door shut on the possibility of former female boxing star turned MMA fighter Holly Holm joining the promotion.
Holm, who had a very successful career as a professional boxer, holding belts in three different weight-classes during a 33-2-3 career, together with her manager met with White and Lorenzo Fertitta following UFC 171 on Saturday night, but it seems that things didn’t go according to plan.
“Not good at all,” White was reported to have said of the meeting on yesterday evening’s ‘UFC Tonight’ show. “We’re not interested anymore.”
That’s bad news for woman’s mixed martial arts fans who saw Holm as one of the main threats to current UFC champion Ronda Rousey’s bantamweight title after she compiled a perfect 6-0 record in MMA following her transition from boxing in 2011.
The rumor-mill suggests that Holm’s manager was looking for a big pay day for his client, but that the UFC had a completely different valuation of her worth, and that quickly lead to a breakdown in their talks.
Meanwhile, it was also claimed on the ‘UFC Tonight’ show that the promotion are also not in talks with former WMMA sensation turned Hollywood star Gina Carano, nor are they speaking with the woman many feel is the division’s true No.1 contender, former Strikeforce champion Cris ‘Cyborg’.
That would seem to suggest that the exceptionally unlucky Cat Zingano will finally get her chance to take on Rousey next instead.
If Rousey were to come out on top in that fight however, then there would begin to be a real lack of credible opponents for her in the UFC’s current roster, so they would be wise not to completely turn their back on the possibility of engaging in talks with the likes of Holm and ‘Cyborg’ in teh coming months.
