Sadly we won’t be seeing Chan Sung Jung, better known as ‘The Korean Zombie’, in the Octagon any time soon as the UFC featherweight fighter has been called up to undertake his mandatory two year military service in his native South Korea.
The 27 year-old Jung has already been out for over a year after suffering a dislocated shoulder in the fourth round of his title fight with Jose Aldo at UFC 163.
He had been scheduled to return against Akira Corassani in Sweden earlier this month, but another injury kept him out of action and now he’ll begin his military service on October 20th.
“He feels bad for his fans and thankful to the UFC, Dana and the Ferttitas for letting him be a professional fighter,” Jung’s manager Brian Rhee told MMAfighting.com. “He’s going to rehab, train and comeback stronger than ever after the end of the 2 years!”
‘The Korean Zombie’ earned his nickname for his ability to withstand potentially fight-ending blows and yet still keep coming forward and attacking his opponents.
He become something of a cult favorite amongst fans and would go on to win ‘Fight of The Year’ in 2010 for his first war with Leonard Garcia in the WEC, ‘Submission of The Year’ in 2011 after showing his ground skills with a rarely seen ‘Twister’ submission in his rematch with Garcia in the UFC’s Octagon, and another ‘Fight of The Year’ award for a memorable back and forth scrap with Dustin Poirier in 2012.
