Not only is Ben Henderson finally going to initiate a long-talked about plan to move up to the welterweight division, but he’s going to do it on short notice.
Last night it was revealed that the former lightweight champion will be stepping to replace the injured Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson against Brandon Thatch in the main event of UFC Fight Night 60 in just two weeks time.
According to Dana White, Henderson “begged” for the fight as he wants to banish the memory of his controversial decision loss to Donald Cerrone a couple of weeks ago in Boston.
That had been Henderson’s second loss in a row, but he is still currently ranked at No.5 in the 155lb division and had been expected to face Jorge Masvidal in April – a fight which has now been scrapped.
In Thatch he faces a very talented striker who’s not broken into the welterweight top 15 rankings so far, but is on a ten fight winning streak and has turned heads with his back-to-back first round stoppage victories in the octagon so far.
UFC Fight Night 60 takes place in Colorado on February 14th and will air on FOX Sports 1 with Max Holloway Vs Cole Miller serving as the night’s co-main event.
