Alberquerque police have today confirmed that UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones is a suspect in a hit-and-run incident on Sunday, and based on the evidence in their report it’s not hard to see why.
The official police report states that a silver SUV that Jones was believed to have been traveling in ran a red-light causing a car crash that resulted in a 20 year-old pregnant woman in another car being hospitalized.
An off-duty cop spotted Jones running away from his car, returning briefly to scoop up large amount of cash, and then fleeing on foot from the scene.
Jones was in a rental car at the time of the accident and documents found in it had his name on them. To make matters worse for the UFC star a marijuana pipe was also discovered inside the SUV.
Police are currently looking to question Jones about the accident, but so far have been unable to get in touch with him. At this stage there are no charges leveled against Jones, though police spokesman Tanner Tixier stated that, “We are currently following up with the victim to check on her health status. We need to confirm the severity of the injuries before we file charges.”
Jones has already been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons earlier this year when it emerged he’d tested positive for cocaine during a pre-fight drugs test for UFC 182.
Now another dark cloud is hanging over him which could put his next title defense against Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 in jeopardy and suggests that while he’s still a champion inside the Octagon, outside of it his behavior leaves a lot to be desired.
