When details of the UFC’s sponsorship deal with Reebok first broke, heavyweight fighter Brendan Schaub was amongst the first to voice his disapproval, stating that he currently makes over a hundred thousand dollars in sponsorship money per fight, yet would only make $10,000.
Now, with the dust settling on the deal Schaub appears to have come to the conclusion that it’s not going to be worthwhile for him to fight for that kind of money.
“For me to fight for 10k for the Reebok deal, you’re batsh*t crazy, man,” Schaub stated on the latest episode of his ‘Fighter & The Kid podcast with Bryan Callen. “You’re not getting Big Brown for 10k. If someone came to me right now and offered me three times that money, I wouldn’t do it.”
Schaub’s current circumstances may have made it easier for him to reach that conclusion than many of the other fighters on the UFC’s roster. The Fighter & The Kid podcast has proven to be a big success for the former TUF season 10 finalist, leading to other opportunities including a thriving t-shirt business and spots as a media pundit on both FOX Sports and ESPN.
While his career in the entertainment business is on the up, it’s fair to say that his fighting career has been going in the opposite direction. The 32 year-old is currently coming off back-to-back losses and has won just two of his last six fights in the Octagon, suffering a number of knockout losses along the way.
That led to his friend, UFC color commentator Joe Rogan bluntly telling Schaub that he wasn’t good enough to compete at the top level any more and should hang up his gloves in an infamously awkward episode of the ‘Joe Rogan Experience Podcast’ after his last loss to Travis Browne earlier this year.
Schaub initially dismissed that idea and insisted that he would return to the Octagon and had been floating the idea of a potential cut down to the light-heavyweight division, but it seems he’s now backing down from that and may have fought for the last time.
Listen to Schaub discuss his current situation in the video clip from the latest FATK podcast below.
