Just when you thought UFC legend BJ Penn was retired for good, fellow Hawaiian Max Holloway has brought up the possibility that ‘The Prodigy’ could yet return to the Octagon for a special one-off event.
“I heard Dana White talking about UFC: Hawaii,” Holloway said during a video chat on Periscope. “I heard he said it was already on the agenda and just needed to get over some obstacles. B.J. Penn said if UFC ever came to Hawaii he would come out of retirement for a last one. You guys might just get your wish and see the legend back in action.”
Penn hung up his gloves in the summer of last year after a very disappointing performance against Frankie Edgar in his featherweight debut, losing out by a third round TKO.
It was the third time that Penn had lost to Edgar and with only one win in his past seven fights it seemed the only option for the former lightweight and welterweight champion was to retire.
Now 36, Penn was recently inducted into the UFC’s ‘Hall Of Fame’ and owns his own official UFC gym in Hawaii.
in his absence the 23 year-old Holloway has become Hawaii’s biggest MMA star and is currently making a major splash in the featherweight division with seven victories in a row, leaving him ranked No.5 in the division.
The UFC have talked about hosting an event in Hawaii in the past, but Dana White had admitted back in 2012 that he was concerned about the weather as the only suitable venue would be the outdoor 50,000 seater Aolha Stadium.
