The old rivalry between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier is quickly rising to the surface again now that a title rematch between them is almost certain to take place in the first half of 2016, though if there recent social media interaction are anything to go by the two fighters would like to lock horns ASAP.
It all started yesterday when Jones posted a Twitter message indicating just how eager he is to compete against Cormier.
“Honestly I’d fight Daniel in the OSU wrestling room,” Jones wrote. “John Smith can be our referee. Just trying to take back what’s mine.”
Cormier was quick to call his bluff.
“@JonnyBones if that’s how we wanna do it,” Cormier responded. “I can be in new Mexico in a few hours. And we can do it every day until fight day comes.”
Not willing to back down, Jones indicated he was only too happy to oblige.
“Perfect Daniel, I’ll be at Jackson’s MMA grand opening this Saturday Oct 31st if you want to stop by. #BringyourKleenex”
From the sounds of things former Olympic wrestling captain Cormier was already packing his singlet into a suitcase in anticipation of the impromptu showdown on the mat.
“Jon boy I’ll be there!” Cormier replied. “I’m a man I don’t playing games. See u Saturday! @JonnyBones”
The only sign of anxiety from Jones was in ensuring that Cormier didn’t turn up at the wrong address by mistake.
“Awesome, I’ll be waiting,” Jones stated. “301 Dr Martin Luther King Jr Ave NE, Albuquerque, NM 87102”
In a bid to get the last say on the matter Cormier couldn’t resist taking one final dig at the result of Jones recent hit-and-run court case.
“I’m gonna be there but I need u to make it to the octagon, we don’t wanna violate parole now do we :) @JonnyBones” Cormier wrote.
It’ll be interesting to see if Cormier does actually show up, and if so what actually transpires between them. With a big money fight in the UFC’s Octagon in the works you’d have to think the organization wouldn’t exactly be thrilled about the idea of the two light-heavyweight stars trying to take care of business behind closed doors, even it is only a wrestling match.
Given the history between the two fighters, which includes the now infamous Las Vegas casino brawl between them at a UFC pre-fight press conference last year, tensions are sure to be running high if these two do end up in a room together.
As for when they are actually going to fight again in the UFC, as we’ve reported previously Cormier wants to take some time off first, but he was did meet up with Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta at UFC HQ earlier this week, so there’s no doubt a plan of action is being discussed behind closed doors.
