Jon Jones has posted a number of videos on his Instagram account lately showing him hitting the weights room hard with a new strength training program ahead of his expected return to the Octagon in 2016.
Strength has never been a focus of the former light-heavyweight champion in the past, so it’s led some observers to question whether the 28 year-old might be focusing his attention on the wrong aspects of his training as he seeks to win back the title from Daniel Cormier.
However, Jones appears to be aware of people’s misgivings and posted on Instagram to assure everyone that he and his team have everything under control.
“226 lbs right now and feeling amazing. I’ve been hearing concerns about me doing so much strength training, but just know that there’s a method to our madness. Right now we are in a strength building phase. Totally aware of all the different things needed to be an elite martial artist. #agility #endurance #cardio #mattime #newskills
Believe in the process”
Jones has had something of a ‘wiry’ frame in the past (it’s no coincidence he’s nicknamed ‘Bones’), so packing on a few pounds of muscle and building his strength may prove to be a good thing, which could prove to be a scary prospect for those who have to fight him in the coming year.
If nothing else it’s good for an elite athlete like Jones who’s already accomplished so much in the sport to still have new goals and challenges ahead of him to focus on, and hopefully that will steer him away from the troubled path he was heading down which led to his hit-and-run charge earlier this year.
