A staggering 20,000 people are estimated to have shown up to celebrate woman’s UFC bantamweight champion Holly Holm’s ‘homecoming parade’ yesterday in Alberquerque, New Mexico.
Holm was already a star in her home city thanks to her success in the boxing ring in the past, but her shock head kick KO of Ronda Rousey at UFC 193 last month has propelled her to superstardom, making her a household name around the world and prompted Alberquerque’s governor to name December 6th, ‘Holly Holm Day’ in her honor.
“Thank you so much for being here today and not just today, but always,” Holm said on the mic in front of an enormous crowd at Civic Plaza. “And I’m not done yet. We’re still gonna take it to the top.”
While no date has been set yet, it’s widely believed that Holm will now make her first 135lb title defense in a rematch with Rousey in what’s certain to be another enormous fight that the world will be watching.
For the mean time though Holm will no doubt just be happy to revel in the moment and take stock of her remarkable achievements, which includes being the first ever combat sports athlete to win a major boxing and MMA title, not to mention also having been a champion kickboxer in the past too.
