Carlos Condit revealed after his split decision loss to welterewight champion Robbie lawler at UFC 195 at the turn of the year that he’s seriously considering hanging up his gloves, and a week on from that it’s still weighing heavily on his mind.
Truth be told, retirement has been on his mind for some time, and indeed Dana white revealed post-fight last weekend that Condit had confided in him that it was a possibility even when the fight with Lawler was first booked last year.
Speaking to UFC.com the 32 year-old ‘Natural Born Killer’ confirmed his comments were by no means a knee-jerk reaction in the aftermath of his extremely close, but ultimately unsuccessful fight for the title.
“I’ve been thinking about my future for a long time,” Condit said. “Fighting is a tough sport where happy endings are few and far between, and I definitely want to leave the game before the game leaves me.
That’s the kind of answer you’d expect from one of the smarter fighters in the game, but at the same time his performances in the Octagon over the years leave no doubt that fighting is in his blood, and he himself admits that the possibility of an immediate rematch with the champion is also in his thoughts.
“Fighting is such a big part of who I am and the chance to get back in there with Robbie again is something I could get excited about. But if it’s time to explore a new path, then I’ll go into it with the same passion. It’s always been about the journey for me and I guess we’ll have to wait and see how things play out.”
