Two of the UFC middleweight divisions best, Vitor Belfort and Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza will lock horns in the main event of UFC Fight Night 87 in Brazil on May 14th.
Belfort is coming off a head kick KO victory against Dan Henderson in November which put him back in the win column after coming up short in his bid to take the title earlier in 2015, losing out by first round TKO to Chris Weidman.
The 38 year-old has emerged victorious in four of his last five bouts and is currently ranked No.3 in the official middleweight division rankings.
‘Jacare’ lost a controversial split decision verdict to another leading contender Yoel Romero at UFC 194 last month, but since then Romero has failed a drug test and as such their fight is set to be amended to a no-contest ruling and he’s also been pulled from the divisional rankings.
That means that ‘Jacare’, who was on a five fight winning streak prior to that encounter, is still firmly in the title picture and sits just one place above Belfort in the rankings at No.2.
Both ‘Jacare’ and Belfort had been seen as potential opponents for the division’s new champion Luke Rockhold, but the fact that the UFC have booked this fight instead suggests that we may also be heading for an immediate rematch between Rockhold and Chris Weidman as well, though there’s been no official word on that so far.
