A lightweight rematch between Tony Ferguson and Michael Johnson has been announced for UFC 197 on March 5th in Las Vegas.
The two originally fought at UFC On FOX 3 back in 2012 with Johnson emerging victorious by unanimous decision on that occasion.
Since then Ferguson has gone on an impressive seven fight winning streak, taking out the likes of Abel Trujillo, Gleison Tibau, Josh Thomson and most recently Edson Barboza along the way.
By way of comparison Johnson has gone 5-4 over the same period, though during that time he did have enjoy a four fight winning streak against Joe Lauzon, Gleison Tibau, Melvin Guillard and Edson Barboza.
However, it’s perhaps a little surprising to see him going up against Ferguson again at this stage as he’s coming off back-to-back losses to Beneil Dariush and Nate Diaz.
That being said, Johnson is still just two places behind Ferguson in the official UFC Lightweight rankings at No.7 and this presents a great opportunity for him to snap right back into the mix, while on the other hand ‘El Cucuy’ gets the chance to avenge the only loss of his 11 fight spell in the UFC’s Octagon.
Ferguson Vs Johnson II should take place on the pay-per-view main card at UFC 197 which will feature a blockbuster double-header at the top of the bill with featherweight title holder Conor McGregor moving up to lightweight to fight the current champion Rafael dos Anjos, while Holly Holm makes her first bantamweight defense against Miesha Tate.
