Former UFC light-heavyweight champion is on a mission to get back the title that was stripped from him following his hit-and-run incident last year, but he doesn’t intend to stick around at 205lb for too much longer after that.
During a fan Q&A on social media, Jones was asked how many more fights he saw himself having at light-heavyweight, to which he replied, “Maybe 3.”
When pushed to reveal who those three fights would be against, Jones named them as Daniel Cormier, Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson and Alexander Gustafsson.
Cormier is of course the current 205lb champ despite having lost to ‘Bones’ only a few months prior to him being stripped of the belt. It’s been anticipated for some time that Jones Vs DC II will be up next, and indeed the word on the street is that the title rematch will be officially announced later this week.
Johnson is another obvious target for Jones as he’s now firmly installed as the No.2 contender in the division following his 86 second destruction of Ryan Bader this past weekend in New Jersey.
Gustafsson sits at No.3 in the rankings, but he’s actually lost his last two fights, being TKO’d by the aforementioned ‘Rumble’ Johnson before then being handed an opportunity to fight for the title against Cormier which resulted in a very close split decision loss.
Despite that it’s clear that Jones still feels he has unfinished business with the Swedish fighter who gave him the toughest fight of his career to date in a 2013 ‘Fight of The Year’ performance that ended with a controversial unanimous decision verdict in Jones favor.
Assuming Jones was to defeat all three top contenders then he would effectively have cleaned out the division and it’s known that the 28 year-old harbors an ambition to then move up to heavyweight which would undoubtedly be a mouth-watering prospect.
