UFC superstar Conor McGregor has got people talking once again as footage emerges of him sparring ex-boxing champion Chris Van Heerden earlier this week.
The 28 year-old South African, Van Heerden is a former IBO and IBF welterweight boxing champion, and the fact McGregor has sought him out has increased speculation that ‘The Notorious’ might be interested in fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr in the boxing ring.
However, given Van Heerden’s lengthy frame and weight it’s just as likely that the Irishman is just working on his boxing skills ahead of a potential 170lb rematch with Nate Diaz.
McGregor’s performance against Heerden in the sparring session has met with mixed reactions, though those who witnessed him in action first-hand at the Box ‘N Burn gym in Los Angeles came away impressed with what they’d seen of the much-hyped star.
“All thats been asking! I’ve sparred with TOP fighters & @TheNotoriousMMA Boxing game is Right-Up there 👊🏻💯 @BoxNBurn,” Van Heerden wrote on Twitter.
“Nevr thought @TheNotoriousMMA had a chance against @FloydMayweather until I seen him spar 2day in@BoxNBurn AMAZING,” wrote former Olympic silver medalist Tony Jeffries who was watching from ringside.
“Wow this guy can box like fu*k,” Jeffries added later in a post that was retweeted by McGregor himself.
