Mirsad Bektic earned himself a nice submission victory tonight at UFC 204, tapping out Russell Doane late in the first round.
Round One:
Early exchange of punches in the center of the cage to start. Groin strike from Doane, but Bektic’s ok to continue. Bektic threatens with an overhand right that just misses.
Quick hands inside from Bektic as he fires straight punches down the pipe. Great takedown from Bektic and avoids some upkicks from Doane as he settles into his opponent’s guard.
Doane tries to scramble up and gets to his feet, but Bektic body locks from the back and dumps him to the mat. Doane immediately back up, but Bektic is still behind him, and eventually drags him down again.
Frustratingly for him, Doane stands. Bektic with a more controlled takedwon this time and secures back control as he begins looking for a rear-naked choke.
Doane defends the choke, but Bektic stays on him in the final minute of the round and sinks in the choke again, and this time Doane is left with no option but to tap out.
Bektic has endured a lengthy layoff due to injury, but there was no sign of ring rust tonight upon his return to action, and with this win he re-establishes himself as one-to-watch in the featherweight division.
