Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones was back in the cage on Saturday night, competing against recently retired star Dan Henderson at the Submission Underground 2 grappling event.
The two fighters had been scheduled for an MMA fight four years ago at UFC 151, but that infamously fell through when ‘Hendo’ pulled out injured, resulting in the entire event being scrapped.
Sunday’s match-up was a purely grappling affair with no striking allowed, and after a few minutes of clinch work against the cage Jones executed a slick throw to take Henderson down to the mat.
Jones dominated from them on as he passed Henderson’s guard and eventually tapped him out with an arm triangle choke.
Afterwards, Jones got on the mic and called out the event’s organizer Chael Sonnen to grapple with him at the next Submission Underground event on January 29th.
Another recently retired UFC fighter, Miesha Tate also grappled at the event opposite Jessica Eye, who’s still on the promotion’s roster.
Tate had appeared to submit Eye with an armbar during regulation time, but the referee mistakingly called an end to the bout thinking that she had tapped out, which proved not to have been the case and led to the match-up being restarted.
After that confusion the bout would go to overtime, with Tate emerging victorious after escaping Eye’s submissions in quicker time than her opponent was able to.
