A featherweight title clash between Alexander Volkanovski and Brian Ortega has been targeted to take place at UFC 260 on March 27th at a location still to be confirmed.
The fight will give featherweight champion Volkanovski an opportunity to, at least temporarily, move away from his rivalry with former champion Max Holloway, who he has now beaten twice in a row – albeit with the last one ending with a controversial split decision verdict.
In total, Volkanovski has now amassed a 22-1 career record, including nine in the UFC to date, picking up other high-profile wins over the likes of Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes along the way.
As for Ortega, he had been unbeaten in 14 professional fights prior to going up against Holloway for the title in 2018, but that run came to a rough end as he was picked apart by ‘Blessed’ before a doctor’s stoppage at the end of the fourth round.
Ortega then retreated into the shadows for the best part of two years, but when he did finally return in October of last year he looked better than ever, with a major leap in his striking ability enabling him to claim a convincing decision win over ‘The Korean Zombie’.
Volkanovski vs. Ortega is expected to feature as the co-main event on the UFC 260 card, with a heayweight title clash between Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou having now been unveiled as the headliner.
