UFC legend Amanda Nunes has sparred with current bantamweight champion Kayla Harrison in the past, and she believes she can still exploit some of the weaknesses in her game that she discovered then that she believes still remain to this day.
“I spar (with) Kayla before,” Nunes said on the UFC’s Deep Waters podcast.
“We sparred, training. Honestly, when she first arrived in the gym a long time ago, I know she evolved a lot, but she still does the same mistakes since we sparred, you know?
“I studied her a lot.”
The 38-year-old Nunes left the American Top Team gym where they both trained back in early 2022, while she was still a two-division champion in the UFC. She then went on to make two further defenses of the bantamweight title before retiring in the summer of 2023.
As for the 36-year-old Harrison, she was still in the PFL promotion when Nunes left ATT, and was only a few months removed from having won her 2nd lightweight tournament there.
Harrison would go on to lose in the final of her third lightweight tournament at the end of 2022, but by 2024 she had made the jump over to the UFC and has so far won all three of her fights, culminating in a title victory over Julianna Pena back in June of last year.
Nunes was in attendance to watch that fight and also signalled her intention to come out of retirement to fight her former training partner.
So Nunes has been able to witness the fighter that Harrison has evolved into over the past few years, and still feels confident that she will have the upper-hand in the match-up when they step into the Octagon together in the co-main event of UFC 334 in New York City on November 14th.
