Anderson Silva has respectfully called for a superfight between himself and Conor McGregor, and would be willing to drop to a catchweight in order to make it happen.
“I have a huge admiration for the great athlete that Conor is and I believe this superfight would be something historic for the sport, neither of us has anything else to prove,” Silva wrote on Instagram. “I believe UFC and (MMA) fans would like to watch this great martial spectacle, testing my martial skills against him would be fantastic.”
Silva’s callout came after McGregor declared ‘The Spider’ to be No.1 on his list of All-Time MMA greats – and also named himself in the No.2 spot.
McGregor also put Georges St-Pierre further down the list, partly because he believes he ducked the opportunity to move up a division to fight Silva when they were in their prime.
McGregor has also fought at welterweight, so technically a catchweight with Silva is possible, but truth be told it feels like a size mismatch as the Brazilian is a natural middleweight who has also fought comfortably at light-heavyweight and would stand 5″ taller than the Irishman.
Given that McGregor began as a featherweight it would seem unwise to push beyond the welterweight barrier, but as he’s proven in the past, he’s not afraid of taking on risky challenges.
