Former UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad helped corner Brendan Allen during his 5th round submission win over Christian Leroy Duncan in the main event of UFC Fight Night 290 last night, and he dropped some interesting behind-the-scenes information afterwards.
According to Muhammad, Allen went into the fight while still in the midst of battling a staph infection, yet still managed to fight for the best part of five rounds and emerge victorious.
“What people don’t know is Brendan was dealing with a staph infection since Tuesday of fight week,” Muhammad wrote on social media. “Had to get on antibiotics, still has 5 days left on them, and despite all that adversity, went out there and got the finish.
“Never complained, never made excuses, just found a way to win. That’s the heart of a champion. Proud of my brother.”
Even though he was on antibiotics, a staph infection can still leave a patient feeling fatigued as their immune system fights off the bacteria, so a 25 minute fight was hardly an ideal scenario for Allen, but he was able to work through it and was rewarded with his fourth victory in a row and a $100,000 performance bonus into the bargain.
