Jai Herbert was gradually able to get the better of Matheus Camilo tonight at UFC Fight Night 290 to win by unanimous decision.
Round One
Cautious opening minute passes without a clean connection. Low kick from Camilo.
Punch on one side and a head kick attempt on the other from Herbert. Straight right for Herbert.
Herbert starting to put his jab to work. Punch from Camilo. A few more strikes from range from Herbert.
Low kick for Camilo. Jab lands for Herbert. Camilo closes the distance and lands nicely with hooks. Camilo pressuring now and clinches up.
Herbert trying for a throw, but only succeeds in pulling Camilo down on top of him.
Camilo in half-guard. Somebody’s bleeding and it might actually be Camillo. 10 seconds to go. Camilo lands a few punches as Herbert is trying to escape back to his feet.
Round Two
Low kicks exchanged. Nice couple of punches get through for Camilo. Herbert trying for a body kick, but doesn’t land it cleanly.
Low kick for Herbert. Jabs from him. Now a body kick. Calf kick from Camilo. Camilo into close quarters and then drags Herbert down. He’s in full mount and then takes the back. There’s a scramble, but Herbert can’t get away and Camilo seizes his back again.
Camilo moves to full mount in the center of the Octagon. Herbert powers his way out of that and actually manages to sweep on top.
Herbert posturing over Camilo but then is back down into his closed guard. A few punches land for Herbert. He postures again and Camilo tries to kick him away. Herbert back into his guard though.
Right hand for Herbert. He stands over Camilo and then drops down to land a punch. Left hand from Herbert.
Round Three
Calf kick for Herbert. He lands a jab. Now he threatens with a head kick that’s blocked. Hook lands well for Camilo.
Right hand from Herbert and a low kick. Jab to the head and body from Herbert.
Low kick for Camilo as Herbert landed the jab again. Jab and a kick on the other side from Herbert.
Body punch for Camilo. Body punch and a leg kick for Herbert. Now a left hook.
Good output from Herbert here. Punch from Camilo. Big left hook for Camilo lands clean.
Camilo into the clinch against the cage now. Herbert tries for a throw, but fails. Herbert able to reverse the clinch now though and looks for a knee. They jockey for position and then break free.
A couple of punches for Herbert. Solid punch from Camilo. Calf kick for Camilo. Now one from Herbert.
Camilo drives in for a takedown, but Herbert stuffs it and gets on top in the center of the Octagon.
Hammerfist for Herbert as Camilo was punching from his back. Camilo gets space to stand back up with 30 seconds to go.
Jab for Herbert. They both exchange punches without landing clean. Now into the clinch. Camilo trying for a takedown, but Camilo denies that and lands a couple of knees to the body.
Decision
Camilo got the better of the first round here, but Herbert managed to fight his way back into it in the second and then upped his work-rate in the third to ensure he emerges with a unanimous decision victory (29-28 x3).
