There’s been much debate over the past week on who UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos will fight next, and post-fight at UFC 150 Dana White was finally able to give a definitive answer.
“No,” White bluntly replied when asked by Ariel Helwani whether Alistair Overeem would get the next shot at the title.
He then moved on to confirm that Cain Velasquez would be the man who would get the fight instead, and the chance to avenge the loss he suffered to JDS back at ‘UFC On FOX 1’ last year.
Last week White had seemed excited by the idea of JDS Vs Overeem, but while he didn’t say why he’s now opted to go for Velasquez instead it could be that it was just too problematic to line Overeem up for a fight just two days after his suspension ends.
Earlier this week Overeem had talked up the possibility of him being able to negotiate with NSAC to get his fighters license back early which would have smoothed out the process, but the commission’s Keith Keizer quickly shot down that idea.
There’s no doubt that there would have been more buzz surrounding a fight between ‘Cigano’ and Overeem, but JDS Vs Velasquez is also an excellent match-up and it’s only fair that the former champion gets the opportunity first so alls well that ends well.
